The School Foundation
The school was founded by the will of Edward Brown in 1691, in which the following provisions were made:
- Thirty shillings for the rent of a convenient house in Horbling for a teacher.
- Five pounds per annum to be paid to some honest sober person of the Protestant Religion to teach ten poor children (parents in Horbling) to read English, until they could read well in the Bible and also instruct them in the Christian Religion.
- Twenty shillings per annum to buy Bibles, primers, psalters and catechisms.
- Three pounds ten shillings to apprentice a poor child.
In 1837 the school was held in the church as there was no schoolhouse or room.
Recognising its historic foundation, the school will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the Church at parish and diocesan level.
The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all of its pupils.
